1979: Happy Birthday to Me!

1979: Happy Birthday to Me!

It was 1979. A baby girl with a head full of hair was born. Her parents were excited and her siblings, not so much. She would be the last of Betty and Al’s three children.

As a little girl she loved the outdoors, singing, Punky Brewster, baking, Barbies, remote control cars ( I heard she used to drive them over the feet of guys that came to visit her sister), dogs (her first dog’s name was Spanky but the family got rid of him after her mom caught her and the dog licking each other in the face), Cabbage Patch Kids, Knight Rider, jumping out her parent’s parked car like the guys on Dukes of Hazard (damn she’s weird), swinging on the playground (she still can’t resist a swing-set), visiting her sister at ECU and Girl Scouts.   She totally failed at learning piano, ballet and ice skating!

Fast forward several years and she’s off to college without really knowing what she wanted to be when she grows up. All she knew was her parents said she was going to college and there was no other option. She finally figured it out and went on to earn a Bachelor and Masters degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.  AGGIE PRIDE!

Today, she is a creative, funny, kind, caring, resilient, and sensitive (don’t tell anybody) woman.  She is adventurous, very analytical, curious, confident and always there to support a friend. She starts her day with gospel music, prayers and meditation and ends with trap music and the thought “I’ve got to win the lottery” floating through her brain. She is Oprah, Iyanla, and an accomplished private detective rolled into one for her friends and family. She’s not perfect but everyday  she recognizes she is fortunate to be amongst the living and works toward becoming a better person. She is introspective and very self aware. Who is this woman? This is Allison. Me, the girl from Southeast Raleigh. The dream chaser who turned 40 today. Just as I was born on April 2, I gave birth to this platform today. I hope you will enjoy reading and participating. And sis, remember, whether you agree or disagree, please respect this online community of sisterhood at all times.

You ready? Let’s talk.
