Woman Crush Wednesday: Rapsody

Dear Black Women—
A collection of odes await us from one of the best female rappers of our time, this week’s Woman Crush Wednesday: Rapsody!

Rapsody’s Rising Career

Rapsody, whose birth name is Marlanna Evans, hails from the small town of Snow Hill, North Carolina. Her passion for music was discovered at an early age, and her career began when she joined the group Kooley High while attending NC State University.

In 2008, she launched her solo career when she signed with 9th Wonder’s It’s a Wonderful World Music Group. During her time with the label, she released two acclaimed mixtapes and an album (For Everything).

In 2016, Rapsody signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label. The following year she released her second album, Laila’s Wisdom, which received Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song.

Eve: A Love Letter

Rapsody’s third studio album, Eve, dropped on August 23rd, 2019. It features tracks named after some of the most iconic black women in history. Moreover, they represent traits that black women embody and have shown over generations. Furthermore, they highlight the diversity of black womanhood.

The album contains titles such as ‘Serena’, ‘Maya’, ‘Michelle’, and ‘Sojourner’. The tracks are named after black women who have paved the way in the past and black women who are paving the way in the present. Black women who are stellar athletes and artists, and black women are political and cultural royalty.

During a recent interview with the Recording Academy, Rapsody explained for whom she created the album:

“Specifically, directly first I wanted to talk to black women. I wanted to have a conversation. I wanted to write my letters to them to show that or remind us that we are beautiful, we are strong, that we are human. It’s okay to feel weak at times because we do carry so much and we have to go through so much. We have to fight so much, but we still persevere.”

So there you have it. Black women— We are beautiful! We are strong! We are human! And it’s alright to be our whole selves in addition to our perfectly imperfect selves at the same time too.

Let’s show ourselves some love. Let’s show this week’s Woman Crush Wednesday, Rapsody, our sister, some support. Purchase her album now.

Your sis,

Allison
